Beautiful Bybrook House: A Timeless Bespoke Shaker Kitchen

Some kitchens are designed to make a statement. Others have a quieter confidence about them. Bybrook House is very much the latter.

We recently revisited this beautiful home and its lovely owners, and were reminded just how timeless a thoughtfully designed kitchen can be. With its elegant proportions, exposed ceiling beams and understated cabinetry, Bybrook House is a wonderful example of how traditional craftsmanship and practical family living can work together.

A Kitchen Designed to Feel Calm

The owners wanted a kitchen that was both practical and timeless. As the room where their family spends much of its time, it was important that the space felt calm, welcoming and easy to live in.

Our plain Shaker cabinetry, painted in Farrow & Ball's Ammonite, provides a soft, neutral backdrop that complements the character of the property. The light finish was a deliberate choice. Their previous kitchen had been considerably darker, and the owners wanted to brighten the room without detracting from its beautiful beamed ceiling.

Polished chrome Leebank handles by Armac Martin add a subtle touch of luxury, while the clean lines of the cabinetry ensure the overall design remains understated.

It's a kitchen that doesn't need to shout for attention.

Bespoke Storage That Makes Everyday Life Easier

One of the real advantages of bespoke cabinetry is the ability to make use of spaces that might otherwise be overlooked.

At Bybrook House, the former chimney breast has been transformed into practical storage for kitchen essentials, demonstrating how cabinetry can be designed around the individual characteristics of a property.

A generous larder is another favourite feature.

Designed to conceal food and appliances, it helps keep the kitchen organised and the worktops clear — something particularly valuable in a busy family home.

As the owners explained:

“Our favourite feature is the larder, which neatly conceals both appliances and food. We also love the Quooker tap – we're so used to having boiling water readily available.”

It's often these everyday details that make the greatest difference.

Traditional Design, Modern Living

The central island creates a natural division within the kitchen while providing additional preparation space and storage.

Unusually, the island incorporates a gas hob, a choice that works particularly well with the traditional character of the Shaker cabinetry. Integrated appliances maintain the clean, uninterrupted appearance of the room, while hardwearing worktops were selected with everyday family life in mind.

The result is a kitchen that feels elegant without being precious — somewhere to cook, gather and spend time together.

Why the Owners Chose Collins Bespoke

Bybrook House came to us through a personal recommendation.

The owners visited our showroom after being introduced by friends and felt that Collins Bespoke was the right fit for their project. For them, the appeal of a handmade kitchen was about more than appearance. It was the opportunity to create something designed specifically around their home and the way they lived.

And we're particularly pleased that, following their kitchen project, they returned to Collins Bespoke for additional storage solutions.

Their recent feedback means a great deal to us:

“Collins Bespoke truly offers beautiful craftsmanship and quality. Their cabinetry is not only stunning but built to last, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. After our kitchen project, we returned to them for additional storage solutions.”

They also highlighted the friendliness and attentiveness of our team, along with the aftercare they received following installation.

For us, that ongoing relationship is every bit as important as the finished cabinetry.

A Kitchen That Stands the Test of Time

Looking back at Bybrook House, what strikes us most is how beautifully the kitchen continues to sit within its surroundings.

The neutral palette, traditional detailing and carefully considered storage have created a space that feels as relevant today as it did when it was first installed.

And that, ultimately, is what we believe bespoke cabinetry should achieve.

Not simply a beautiful kitchen on the day it's completed, but one that continues to work for the people who live with it for years to come.
